Naked In Death by J.D. Robb - spoilers
I understood going in that the book club was about the socialization and then the book, but if you don't want to read the selected book and are in fact determined not to read it - why buy the book? Granted this particular book is a mass market paperback available for a mere $7.99 plus tax...
Of the 13 members, the nominator abstained, 2 members did not respond, and 10 voted yes. 8 members made it to the gathering - the nominator and 7 of the yes votes. 4 admitted (bragged?) that they bought the book and didn't read it; 3 of those indicated they were pretty sure before they bought the book that they weren't even going to attempt to read it.
When asked why the answers were all some variation of 'I dunno'.
The main character is a female homicide cop in the not too distant future who meets a stunningly handsome, ultra rich, unrepentant former criminal mastermind, and solves a multiple murder case while beginning a relationship with him. This is actual the first in a series of books about these people, their developing relationship, and their ever-increasing circle of friends and acquaintances. Some members found one or more of these items/characteristics offensive, but choose to buy the book and complain rather then vote no. Why?
$7.99 + tax. They could have bought food, candy, a different book, gas, yarn... Why?
I don't get it.
